Where the hardware wallet habit came from

12 March 2026 · A reading of the category, and of the device on this site.

For a few years, private keys lived in files on laptops and inside accounts that someone else could freeze. The failure mode was always the same: the key and the internet shared a machine. A hardware wallet is the answer that stuck. The key is born inside a small device. The internet can ask for a signature. It cannot take the key.

Prague, and a screen anyone could audit

The device that made the category obvious came from SatoshiLabs in Prague. Trezor put a screen and physical buttons on a dedicated box, and published the firmware so a stranger could read what the box was doing. The screen was not decoration. It was the place a person checked the destination and the amount, because the computer asking for the signature might be lying.

That choice set a habit. If the words are not on the device, they are not yet real. A recovery phrase, later standardized so the same word list could restore a key, was shown on that screen and written on paper. It was not typed into a website.

Paris, and a chip with one job

Ledger, in France, took the other half of the problem seriously: even a careful screen is attached to a circuit board. Their devices put the key in a secure element, a chip built to resist being opened, and used the rest of the hardware to show and confirm. The shapes got smaller. The rule did not. Read the device. Then press.

Those two companies still make their own products. Nothing on nemoclawagent.com is a Trezor, a Ledger, or a stand-in for either. The history matters because the habit is now the category, not a brand.

Cypress, and the same rule

NemoClaw is a hardware wallet from INFINITE BUSINESS & EVENT SOLUTIONS, INC., at 18062 FM 529 RD STE 205, Cypress, Texas. The object is a rounded square rather than a slim stick. A blue edge marks the side you pick up. Two buttons sit under a screen. Before you approve anything, you read that screen. A tab in a browser is not the record.

The signing steps themselves are written out on the signing page, and the screen is the subject of the next note.
